Our smartphones accompany us everywhere, recording where we travel, who we communicate with, what we search for, and how we spend our time. Both Google Android and Apple iOS are equipped with complex telemetry pipelines and advertising identifiers designed to profile user habits for ad networks and third-party analytics firms.
Fortunately, you do not have to forfeit your personal privacy to enjoy modern smartphone capabilities. By conducting a 10-minute Smartphone Privacy Audit, you can lock down sensitive permissions and stop silent background data harvesting. Follow our step-by-step checklist below for both Android and iPhone devices.
1. Disable Precise Location for Non-Navigation Apps
Navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze require precise GPS data to give turn-by-turn directions. However, shopping apps, social media feeds, weather widgets, and photo editors do not need your exact coordinates down to the meter.
- On iPhone (iOS): Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Tap on individual apps and toggle Precise Location to Off. Also ensure access is set to “While Using the App” rather than “Always”.
- On Android: Go to Settings > Location > App location permissions. Select apps individually and turn off Use precise location.
2. Turn Off Personalized Ad Tracking & Reset Your Advertising ID
Every smartphone contains a unique advertising identifier that apps utilize to correlate your identity across diverse platforms:
- On iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. Toggle “Allow Apps to Request to Track” to Off. This instructs iOS to automatically deny tracking requests from all newly installed apps. Scroll down to Apple Advertising and turn off Personalized Ads.
- On Android: Go to Settings > Privacy > Ads (or Settings > Google > All Services > Ads). Tap Delete advertising ID. This permanently severs your device from historical tracking profiles.
3. Restrict Microphone & Camera Permissions
Many games, shopping apps, and utilities request microphone and camera access during installation even when their core features do not require audio or video input.
- On Android: Navigate to Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. Inspect both Camera and Microphone. Revoke access from all apps that do not strictly require them to function.
- On iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone (and Camera). Toggle off any app you do not recognize or trust.
4. Disable Lock Screen Notification Previews
By default, smartphones display message previews, verification codes, and emails on the lock screen. Anyone who glances at your device—or picks it up while you are away from your desk—can view sensitive two-factor authentication codes and private conversations.
- On iPhone: Go to Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and choose When Unlocked.
- On Android: Go to Settings > Notifications > Notifications on lock screen and choose Hide silent conversations and sensitive content.
5. Audit Background App Refresh
Background app refresh enables applications to connect to remote servers, upload telemetry, and refresh content when you are not actively using them. Disabling this saves substantial battery life and curbs data leakage:
- On iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Disable it entirely or allow it only for essential messaging apps.
- On Android: Go to Settings > Apps > Special app access > Background data to restrict idle network access.
6. Turn Off Diagnostic and Usage Data Sharing
During initial device setup, operating systems ask for permission to share crash telemetry and usage analytics with hardware makers and operating system vendors:
- On iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements. Turn off Share iPhone Analytics and Share with App Developers.
- On Android: Go to Settings > Privacy (or Google Services) > Usage & diagnostics and toggle it to Off.
7. Enable Encrypted DNS on Mobile
Just as on desktop computers, mobile browsers benefit immensely from encrypted DNS queries (DoH/DoT):
- On Android: Go to Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS. Select Private DNS provider hostname and enter
one.one.one.one(Cloudflare) ordns.quad9.net(Quad9). - On iPhone: Download the official Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 app or install an encrypted DNS profile via Apple configuration profiles to encrypt all mobile network lookups.
